All G'Day Gourmet seafood products are harvested using sustainable, ocean friendly and dolphin safe practices. G’Day Gourmet is committed to using only sustainably harvested wild caught seafood in our products. This commitment originates from Australia’s stewardship approach to the total environment. Australia has been a world leader in implementing regulations and practices that encourage environmental responsibility to sustain or improve the quality of our land, air and sea. Wild Caught Pink Alaskan Salmon All of the Alaskan Pink Salmon used in G’Day Gourmet is sourced from a fishery that has received the Marine Stewardship Council certification. Refer to the Marine Stewardship Council website, www.msc.org , to learn more about MSC. The Marine Stewardship Council is recognized worldwide as a leader in promoting sustainable fishing practices. Their independent certification process standards have been written following world-wide consultation with fishermen, scientists, fisheries experts, environmental organizations and other people with a strong interest in preserving fish stocks for the future.
Skipjack Tuna G’Day Gourmet uses Skipjack Tuna from the South Pacific. Skipjack tuna is one of the smaller tuna species commercially harvested. Skipjack is also one of the fastest growing fish, maturing in between 16 and 36 months and living to a maximum of 12 years. Skipjack are constantly repopulating. The South Pacific region where the G’Day Gourmet Skipjack are caught includes the coastal waters around Australia and New Zealand. The population of Skipjack Tuna in these waters is not over fished. The trend is an increasing biomass of Skipjack species. There are reporting requirements of quantity of Skipjack caught and regional and national observer programs, including a vessel monitoring program, to insure responsible fishing practices. While no tuna fisheries have been MSC certified, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s SeafoodWatch™ program assesses the environmental sustainability of wild fisheries worldwide. Seafood Watch™ employs five sustainability criteria, corresponding to their guiding principles, to evaluate capture fisheries for the purpose of developing a seafood recommendation for consumers and businesses. These criteria are listed on their website. Once a ranking has been done for each criterion an overall seafood recommendation for a species is assigned. The wild caught Skipjack Tuna in the G’Day Gourmet products have the Green recommendation (“Best Choices”) from Seafood Watch™ per the February 2007 report. More information on Seafood Watch is provided below: The overall rating is recommended using a color-coded system for consumers:
