G’Day Gourmet Mercury Statement

July 29, 2006

Our goal at G’Day Gourmet is to provide an exciting flavor experience for the consumer while reducing exposure to mercury. G’Day Gourmet flavored tuna is made using only light Skipjack tuna wild-caught from the pristine waters surrounding southern Australia.  Skipjack is one of the smallest species of tuna. Because they eat relatively low on the food chain, and because they mature at a relatively young age, Skipjack accumulate less mercury than the larger tuna species. It is widely accepted, based on extensive testing by the FDA and other international bodies, that Skipjack tuna is low in mercury when compared to other, larger species of tuna like Albacore, Yellowfin and Bigeye.

The prestigious South Australian Research and Development Institute conducted mercury test on the G’Day Gourmet skipjack tuna products in May 2005.  A summary of the test results are attached.  The test results are compared to published data from the FDA (2004) for other brands of canned tuna which contain species including Albacore and Light Tunas such as Skipjack, Yellowfin and Tongol (Long Tail).   The test results clearly confirm that the mean for G’Day Gourmet Skipjack tuna is much lower (72%) in mercury than any Albacore sample and is lower than every tuna species being tested by the FDA except for Light Chunk Tongol.

It is also important to point out that G’Day Gourmet is a processed, ready-to-eat food and includes many natural ingredients like non-GMO expeller-pressed canola oil, tomatoes, onions, peppers and herbs.  This product is designed to be consumed as prepared.  The amount of Skipjack tuna in each product varies from 42-55% of the total.  That means that on a per serving basis (i.e., one can), an individual would consume significantly less tuna than a normal canned tuna product packed in either water or brine.  When you consider the low mercury content in the Skipjack tuna in G’Day Gourmet, the consumer actually experiences a dramatically lower exposure to mercury per serving.

The FDA has been testing tuna and other fish species for years to develop a profile of mercury data to help consumers make decisions about what fish they eat and how much is safe.  The FDA does not approve any mercury claims since there are not published standards.  However, the FDA also understands how important it is for consumers to have fish as part of a healthy diet. Consequently, G’Day Gourmet tuna varieties are perfectly positioned to fill the need for great tasting, ready-to-eat tuna that’s worry free.
